Membership The national focus over the past several decades on documenting “disparities” has been critically important, but has not provided in-depth insights into causation and mitigation. It is now time to move the focus from Disparity to Equity — from generating statistics to intervening in the social and environmental determinants that define children’s health and well-being as a national priority. In order to accomplish this, we must develop and sustain a focus on Equity, with outcomes measured in terms of equity-based indicators. Child Health Equity provides a mechanism for translating children’s rights into practice. It uses the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child as a framework for integrating the principles and practice of children’s rights into all aspects of its work. Toward this end, the Society for Equity in Child Health was established to catalyze an interdisciplinary movement to frame the work of child serving professionals . The Society provides an opportunity to engage in an endeavor to advance the knowledge and practice of Child Health Equity. It provides a national forum to engage with like-minded interdisciplinary peers and a venue to share wisdom, experience and energy. The Society will function in an international context, and link with international organizations and colleagues. Through your participation in the Society, you will be engaging in the development of Child Health Equity as an organizing framework and set of principles to advance children’s health and well-being. We are all stakeholders in the problems and shareholders in the solutions. This is an “Aquarius Moment,” a moment that the Society seeks to capture to transform how we conceptualize children and childhood, and how we respond to their needs and rights. |
